I
have been making my living as an Artist since graduating
from Harrow School of Art
in 1978 with a BA Degree in Illustration. This course
gave me an excellent grounding with
a specific insistence on Drawing from life, (We drew
four days a week for three years.)
I have since Illustrated for both advertising and Publishing
throughout my career.
In 1980 I moved to California to continue my studies
at the Otis Parsons School of Art
where I focused on "Plain Air' painting. I found
the 'Mediterranean' light of California a
prime inspiration. It was here I discovered my love
for painting 'in situ' and have always
preferred to work in this manner. I feel my landscapes
benefit from a true feeling of the Artists
presence and I can only honestly capture elements such
as: light and atmosphere
working in this way. Indeed the painting process becomes
a meditation on the landscape
as the Artist becomes 'one' with his surroundings and
the 'moment'.
I returned to London in 1990 and continued to 'Paint'
while still making my living primarily
through Illustration commissions.
In 2003 I published a 'Map of Hampstead Heath' which
I embellished with a number of my
own paintings of 'The Heath'. It has almost sold out
a first edition of 5,000 copies.
